FIX: Joined threads may periodically stop responding when the Thread.join method is called against a thread that is not yet initialized in Microsoft Visual J# .NET (833670)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual J# .NET 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Thread.join method in Microsoft Visual J# .NET, you may notice that the joined threads may periodically stop responding. This problem occurs while you are waiting for the joined threads to finish executing.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you call the Thread.join method of "thread A" against "thread B." "Thread A" now waits for "thread B" to finish before "thread A" executes any additional commands. If "thread B" is joined before the Run method of the thread is called, "thread A" may not return from the Thread.join method.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
