Word 2003 continues to run in the background after you edit an Accelerator for Proposals document in Internet Explorer 6.0 (833666)

SYMPTOMS

If you open a Microsoft Office Solution Accelerator for Proposals document in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and then you save your changes as you close Internet Explorer 6.0, you may receive the following message:Saving the document without selecting 'Save and Notify' may resolve in loss of notification data.
To return to the document to 'Save and Notify', please click Cancel.
To continue without notifying, please click OK.If you click Cancel, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • The document is closed and you cannot use the Save and Notify feature to save your changes in the Accelerator for Proposals document and to send a notification e-mail to the assigned owner of the section or sections that you changed.
  • Microsoft Office Word 2003 continues to run in the background.

    To determine if Word 2003 is running in the background, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager, and then check the Processes tab.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you open a Accelerator for Proposals document (in-place) in Microsoft Internet Explorer, make a change to a section that would cause a notification to be sent to an assigned user, and then quit Internet Explorer without using the Save and Notify feature.

WORKAROUND

To quit Word 2003 that is running in the background, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, locate the Winword.exe file.
  3. To quit Word 2003 (in the background), select the Winword.exe file, and then click End Process.
  4. Click Yes when you receive the following message:WARNING: Terminating a process can cause undesired results including loss of data and system instability. The process will not be given the chance to save its state or data before it is terminated. Are you sure you want to terminate the process?
To prevent these problems and to edit an Accelerator for Proposals document in Word 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Open your Proposals Library in Internet Explorer.
  2. On your Proposals Home page, click Shared Documents (under Working with Documents).
  3. Click the down-arrow (Edit) for the document that you want to edit, and then click Edit in Microsoft Office Word.
  4. Make the changes that you want in your Accelerator for Proposals document.
  5. On the Document Actions task pane, click Save and Notify.
