Hidden windows of custom programs unexpectedly appear on the screen as blank windows in Windows XP (833509)

SYMPTOMS

When you run certain custom programs on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, some of the program's windows that typically are hidden to users may unexpectedly appear on the screen as blank windows.

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you install the hotfix that is documented in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

824141 MS03-045: Buffer overrun in the ListBox and in the ComboBox control could allow code execution

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. Prerequisites

Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the 824141 hotfix that is installed on your computer. To do so:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows XP Hotfix - KB824141, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the hotfix.
