The SMS Manual Installation Wizard cannot successfully upgrade an SMS 2.0 Client to SMS 2003 Legacy Client (833177)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the SMS Manual Installation Wizard (Smsman.exe) to upgrade a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 client to SMS 2003 Legacy Client, the operation is not successful.

CAUSE

The SMS 2.0 client successfully upgrades to SMS 2003 Legacy Client only after the Client Configuration Installation Manager (CCIM) cycle has run. By default, the CCIM cycle runs every 23 hours.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the Systems Management Server 2.0 Resource Guide command-line utility Cliutils.exe with the /KICK switch to start the CCIM cycle, as in the following example:

Cliutils.exe /KICK "Client Configuration Installation Manager"

The Cliutils.exe utility is included in the Support\Reskit\Bin\I386\Diagnose folder on the SMS 2.0 CD-ROM. Cliutils.exe is also included with the Microsoft BackOffice Resource Kit, version 4.5.
