You receive a "No network adapter was found on the physical computer" error message after you install or upgrade to Virtual PC 2004 (833137)
The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMSWhen you start Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 after you install
or upgrade to Virtual PC 2004, you may receive the following error message on
the host operating system: No network adapter
was found on the physical computer. Access to the external network and host
will be unavailable to all virtual machines using virtual networking. Virtual
machines using virtual networking will still be able to access other virtual
machines using virtual networking. To fix this problem, re-enable the Virtual
Machine Network Services driver on one or more network adapters or reinstall
Virtual PC. CAUSEThis problem may occur if the Virtual Machine Network Services
driver is not installed correctly on the host operating system. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, use the following methods in the order that they are presented. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
Reinstall the Virtual Machine Network Services driverTo reinstall the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, follow these steps: - Log on to the computer as an administrator.
- To remove the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Network
Connections.
- Right-click Local Area Connection, and
then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- Click
Virtual Machine Network Services, and then click
Uninstall.
- To reinstall the Virtual Machine Network Services driver, follow these steps:
- On the General tab of the
Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click
Install.
- In the Select Network Component Type
box, click Service, and then click Add.
- In the Select Network Service dialog
box, click Have Disk.
- Click Browse, and then locate the
following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual
PC\Utility\VMNetSrv Note This is the default location of the VMNetSrv folder in Virtual PC 2004. - Type VMNetSrv.inf in
the File name box, and then click Open.
- Click OK, and then click
OK.
- Make sure that Virtual Machine Network
Services appears in the list of installed networking components, make sure
that the check box next to Virtual Machine Network Services is
selected, and then click Close.

of this article describes, go to the next method.
Reinstall Virtual PC 2004To reinstall Virtual PC 2004, follow these steps: - Log on to the computer as an administrator.
- To remove Virtual PC 2004, follow these
steps:
- Click Start, point to
Programs, and then click Control
Panel.
- Click Add or Remove
Programs.
- Click
Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, and then click
Remove.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to
confirm the removal.
- Restart the computer.
- Click Start, point to
Programs, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Network
Connections.
- Right-click Local Area Connection, and
then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- Make sure that Virtual Machine Network
Service does not appear in the This connection uses the
following items list.
- Run the Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Setup program to reinstall Virtual PC
2004.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Virtual PC 2004.
