This article discusses how Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 virtual machines work with CD-ROM drives, DVD-ROM drives, and .iso CD-ROM disk image files on your physical computer.

MORE INFORMATION

When you insert a disk in a CD-ROM drive or in a DVD-ROM drive on your physical computer, the virtual machine that is running on the physical computer automatically captures the disk if the virtual machine window is active. You can also capture a disk or a disk image file manually. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Microsoft Virtual PC.
  2. Click the virtual machine that you want to capture the disk or the disk image on, and then click Start.
  3. Click CD on the menu bar, and then follow any one of the following steps:
    • Click Use Physical Drive drive:, where drive is the letter of the CD/DVD-ROM drive that you want to capture.
    • Click Capture ISO Image, and then find the .iso disk image file that you want to capture.
  4. Follow any one of the following steps:
    • To eject the disk from your physical computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, click Eject CD.
    • To release the disk, click Release Physical Drive drive:, where drive is the letter of the CD/DVD-ROM drive that you captured.
    • To release a disk image file, click Release ImageFile.iso, where ImageFile.iso is the name of the image file that you want to release.
Note The CD-ROM automatic-play function does not work on your physical computer when a virtual machine is active.
