SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) client, you may receive the following error message:
This installation package could not be opened.
For example, you receive this error message when you act on the prompt in the File Download dialog box. The dialog box prompts you to either open the MSdrmClient.msi file from the Microsoft Download Center Web site or save this file to your computer. Regardless of whether you click Open or you click Save, you receive the error message.

Note The size of the MSdrmClient.msi file is 345 kilobytes (KB). If you notice the problem that this article discusses, you may also notice that the size of the downloaded MSdrmClient.msi file is smaller than 345 KB. The files are different sizes because Internet Explorer discards the download of this file as a duplicate file and leaves a corrupted file stub instead of the file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, delete the temporary Internet files on your computer, and then try to install the RMS client.

To delete the temporary Internet files on your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box appears.
  3. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
  4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click OK.
  5. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
Important Additionally, if you plan to download the MSdrmClient.msi file to your computer and then install the RMS client, remove all old copies of the MSdrmClient.msi file from your computer before you download the new MSdrmClient.msi file.

  • In this dialog box, if you click Yes, Internet Explorer opens a window, and then Internet Explorer connects to the RMS client download package on the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
  • You receive the File Download dialog box that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
