This article describes a program error that can have the following error signatures:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Word 2003, when you try to print, quit Word, or save a Word document, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following (where program name is one of the programs that is listed in the "Applies To" section):
Microsoft program name has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you background save a Word document that contains an OLE object.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Microsoft Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Service pack information

This problem is corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1.

WORKAROUND

To temporarily work around this problem, turn off the Allow background saves option in Word 2003. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Save tab, click to clear the Allow background saves check box.
  4. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION
