You receive the "an unknown error has occurred" error message (0x800ccc1a) when you send or you receive e-mail message in Outlook (832566)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you send or you receive e-mail messages in Microsoft Outlook, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following error messages:
An unknown error has occurred. Please save any existing work and restart the program.
(Account: '<account name>', POP3 Server: '<pop3 server name>'),
Error Number: 0x800ccc1a

(Account: '<account name>', SMTP Server: '< smtp server name>'),

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption is turned on for your e-mail account.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, do not use SSL encryption for your e-mail account in Outlook. Use one of the following methods to turn off SSL in your e-mail account.
  • For Microsoft Outlook 97
    1. Start Outlook, and then click Services on the Tools menu.
    2. In the Services window, select the e-mail account that you want to modify, and then click Properties.
    3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    4. Under Server Port Numbers, click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Outgoing Mail (SMTP).
    5. Click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Incoming Mail (POP3).
    6. Click OK two times.
  • For Microsoft Outlook 98 and Microsoft Outlook 2000
    1. Start Outlook, and then click Services on the Tools menu.
    2. In the Services window, click the e-mail account that you want to modify.
    3. Click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab.
    4. Click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Outgoing mail (SMTP).
    5. Click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Incoming mail (POP3).
    6. Click Apply, and then click OK two times.
  • For Outlook 2002
    1. Start Outlook, and then click E-mail Accounts on the Tools menu.
    2. In the E-mail Accounts window, click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
    3. Select the e-mail account that you want to modify, and then click Change.
    4. Click More Settings.
    5. In the Internet E-mail Settings window, click the Advanced tab.
    6. Click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Incoming server (POP3).
    7. Click to clear the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box that is under Outgoing server (SMTP).
    8. Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
    9. Click Close
You can now send and receive e-mail messages in Outlook.
