The Spelling command in Outlook Express 6 is no longer available after you install Works 7.0 (832537)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 7.0
  • Microsoft Outlook Express 6 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Works 7.0, you may not be able to check the spelling in your Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 e-mail messages.

For example, when you click the Tools menu while you are in the body of a new Outlook Express e-mail message, the Spelling command is not available.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You had an earlier version of Microsoft Works installed.
  • You have no other programs installed that provide for common spelling files--for example, Microsoft Office programs.
When you upgraded to Works 7.0, common spelling files that were provided by the earlier version of Works were removed to prevent conflicts when checking the spelling of your Works 7.0 documents.

MORE INFORMATION

Outlook Express 6.0 uses the spelling checker that is provided with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available. If you install any one of these programs, or Microsoft Works Suite 2004 (Works Suite 2004 includes Microsoft Word), the Spelling command is available.

To find this information in Outlook Express, follow these steps:
