BUG: You cannot log on to the MSN Messenger Service on a Smartphone or Pocket PC device (832515)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Pocket PC Phone Edition 1.0
  • Smartphone 2002 1.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install the update for MSN Messenger on your Smartphone or Pocket PC device and then you try to log on to the MSN Messenger service, the connection icon may spin for 20 to 60 seconds, and then you receive the following message
Logon to the Messenger Service failed because the service is not responding. Please try again later.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if too many network connections are set up on the device. If this behavior occurs, MSN Messenger will not sign in because Connection Manager times out before it can establish the connection.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) of the Smartphone or Pocket PC Phone addition for product updates.

WORKAROUND

To work around this timing issue on a Pocket PC or SmartPhone device, reduce the number of connections that are configured on the device. For example, if the device has six dialup connections and six proxy connections, delete any connections that are not generally used.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior was confirmed with a SmartPhone by using Orange GPRS and Pass Through for services in the United Kingdom.
