"Project Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" Error Message and Microsoft Project Quits Unexpectedly (Crashes) When You Save Your Project to Project Server (832395)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to Microsoft Office Project Server 2003, and you open or create a new project and then save the project to the server, Microsoft Project quits unexpectedly (crashes) and you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Microsoft Project has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Restart Microsoft Project.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:
AppName: winproj.exe AppVer: 11.0.2003.816 ModName: odbcmon.dll
   ModVer: 10.0.2002.401  Offset: 000038be

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You save your project to a database and you use a data source name (DSN) to connect to the database.
  • You save your project by using a file name that contains a space character that comes immediately before (or comes immediately before and immediately after) the following string:

    pwd

For example, this problem occurs if you save your project as "MyProject pwd.Published" (without the quotation marks). However, this problem does not occur if you save your project as "Pwd MyProject.Published" (without the quotation marks).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, when you save your project, do not use a file name that contains a space character that comes immediately before (or comes immediately before and immediately after) the following string:

pwd
