SYMPTOMS

When you try to use one of the Microsoft Wireless input devices that is listed in the "Applies To" section, the device does not work. This issue may occur even though you have used the device successfully in the past.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The batteries in your wireless device have to be replaced.
  • The batteries in your wireless device are Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) rechargeable batteries. Ni-Cad rechargeable AA batteries provide 1.2 volts. Standard alkaline AA batteries provide 1.5 volts. It is better to use Alkaline AA batteries with Microsoft wireless input devices.
  • Your wireless devices are out of sync. This issue may occur when you replace the batteries in your wireless device.
  • Your devices are conflicting with other wireless input devices that are using the same wireless channel.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps. Test your devices after each step. If the problem is not resolved, go to the next step.
  1. Turn off any other computers that have wireless devices connected to them.

Turn on only the computer that you want to resolve this issue on. If you are experiencing this issue on more than one computer, follow these steps on one computer at a time.
  2. Make sure that your batteries are not expired.

Replace them if you have to.
  3. Make sure that your batteries are standard AA 1.5 volt batteries.

If you are using Ni-Cad rechargeable AA batteries, replace them with Alkaline AA batteries.
  4. Change the wireless channel that your devices are using, and re-synchronize the devices with the receiver.

To do this, press the button on the top of your wireless receiver (the component that is connected to your computer), and then press the connect button on the bottom of your devices. Repeat this step if you have to.
