Windows Management Instrumentation service terminates with Event ID 7031 (832250)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003
  • Microsoft Server Appliance Kit (SAK), version 2.01

SYMPTOMS

On computers that are running Microsoft Server Appliance Kit (SAK), version 2.01, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service may fail and record the following event in the system log: Event ID 7031 - The Windows Management Instrumentation service has terminated unexpectedly

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the Server Appliance event logging dynamic-link library (DLL) is unloaded prematurely. This causes the WMI service to call an invalid reference to its consumer sink.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

You must install Windows Powered Network Attached Storage 2.01 Service Pack 1 before you install this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
