"Local Policy of This System Requires You to Logon Using a Smart Card" Message Appears When You Try to Log On to the Server (832026)

SYMPTOMSWhen you log on to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server, you may receive the following message:The local policy of this system requires you to logon using a smart card. You receive this error message when you try to log on by using a smart card and when you try to log on without using a smart card. As a result, you cannot log on to the server.CAUSEThis issue may occur if all the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented: - The Interactive logon: Require smart card security setting is configured in the Local security policy of the server.
- You shut down the server, and then you restart it.
- Either a smart card reader is not installed on the server, or an issue exists with the smart card reader that is installed on the server that prevents you from using the smart card reader.
RESOLUTIONTo work around this issue, do one of the following, as appropriate to your situation: - If Terminal Services is configured on the server, log on to the server by using a Terminal Services session from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or later that has a smart card reader installed .
- If Terminal Services is not configured on the server, use the RDToggle Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Terminal Server alias to remotely enable Terminal Services connections on the server, and then log on to the server from a client computer that is running Windows XP or later by using a smart card in a Terminal Services session.
