Users receive non-delivery reports that contain data from other SMTP sessions in Windows 2000 (831911)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows 2000-based computer, when you configure a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server to deliver SMTP mail messages, users may receive non-delivery reports (NDRs) that contain data from active SMTP sessions. This data may include information about senders, recipients, and message bodies.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the SMTP service sends message acknowledgment information to the SMTP transport process. The SMTP transport process uses the information to generate specific fields in the NDR. If the text of the NDR is not null-terminated, the NDR may include information from the computer's memory about other SMTP sessions that are running on the virtual server.
