You may find a Documents and Settings file in the root folder of the hard disk drive of your Windows 2000-based computer (831826)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, you may find a Documents and Settings file in the root folder of your hard disk drive. This file has no file name extension, and the last few letters of the file name may be truncated.

Note The file name may be in the language of your edition of Windows 2000. For example, the German-language edition of Windows 2000 may have a file name that is similar to Dokumente und Einstellung.

CAUSE

This issue may occur because Microsoft Windows Media Player generates the file when a local user account profile is created. This issue may also occur when a user who is a member of the local Administrators group connects remotely to the Windows 2000-based computer by using Terminal Services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the file and upgrade Windows Media Player to a later version. Neither Windows Media Player nor Windows 2000 use the file after it is created. Because the file is not needed by Windows Media Player or Windows 2000, the file can be deleted.
