Overview of the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 update: Windows Small Business Server 2003 (831747)

SUMMARY

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager. This update allows Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 users to configure a Microsoft Exchange Server service in their mail profile, as long as the Exchange Server is a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer. Previously, this was not a supported configuration.

How to download and install the update

Important Before you install this update, consider the following important notes:
  • This update requires you to install Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 on the client by using the Set Up Client Computers Wizard in Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. For more information, see the "How to configure the Set Up Client Computers Wizard" section.
  • This update requires your Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 profile to be configured to use Cached Exchange Mode. If Cached Exchange Mode is not turned on (enabled), Business Contact Manager does not load. For more information about how to turn on Cached Exchange Mode, see the "How to enable Cached Exchange Mode for your Outlook 2003 profile" section. By default, Cached Exchange Mode is turned on when you configure an Exchange Server service in your Outlook 2003 profile.
  • This update does not work with stand-alone Exchange Server installations. This update works only with an Exchange Server that is running on a Small Business Server 2003-based computer. We do not support the use of this update with stand-alone Exchange Server installations or with earlier versions of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server.

  • The workstation where this update is installed must be joined to the domain of the Small Business Server 2003, or be able to join that domain. Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition is not designed to join domains, only workgroups. Therefore, it is not a supported operating system for this update. To join domains, use the Professional version of Microsoft Windows XP.

  • Business Contact Manager is designed for small businesses that are made up of 25 or fewer users who primarily use Internet service providers (ISPs) e-mail accounts, Post Office Protocol (POP) e-mail accounts, and HTTP-based e-mail accounts. We recommend that businesses with sophisticated requirements, like multi-user and contact sharing, consider Microsoft Exchange Server as a collaborative communications server. We also recommend that these businesses use Microsoft Business Solutions CRM for lead management, opportunity management, and incident management, with a searchable knowledge base and reporting tools.

To download and install the update on a single computer, follow these steps:
  1. Download the update. To do this, follow these steps.

    Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
  2. Click Save to save the BusinessContactManager-kb831747-client-enu.exe file to the selected folder.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click BusinessContactManager-kb831747-client-enu.exe.
  4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  6. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type c:\KB831747, and then click OK.
  7. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
  8. In Windows Explorer, double-click BCMSBSPATCH-ENG.msp.
  9. If you are prompted to install the update, click Update.
  10. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the update was installed, you must remove Microsoft Office 2003, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.

To determine the version of Microsoft Business Contact Manager that is installed on your computer, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Irisms32.dll, and then click Search.
  4. In the list of files, right-click Irisms32.dll, and then click Properties.
  5. On the Version tab, determine the version of Microsoft Business Contact Manager that is installed on your computer.

How to configure the Set Up Client Computers Wizard

  1. On SBS server, click Start, point to All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Management.
  2. In the Server Management console navigation, click Client Computers under Standard Management. The right viewer pane should change to display the Manage Client Computer options and all the client computers that are connected to the server.
  3. In the Viewer pane, click the Set Up Client Computers link. This starts the Set Up Computer Wizard.
  4. In the Welcome to the Set Up Computer Wizard dialog box, click Next.
  5. Type the name or the names of the client workstations that you want to deploy Outlook 2003 in the Client computer name field of the Client Computer Names dialog box, and then click Next.
  6. In the Client Applications dialog box, click to select Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 from the list, and then click Next two times.
  7. Click Finish to complete the wizard. After the Set Up Client Computers Wizard has completed, you will receive a message that states the following:

    Finishing Your Installation... To finish setting up the client computer(s), including network configuration and application deployment and configuration, go to the client computer(s), start Internet Explorer, and type http://<servername>/ConnectComputer in the Address bar.

How to turn on Cached Exchange Mode for your Outlook 2003 profile

To turn on Cached Exchange Mode for your Outlook 2003 profile, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook 2003, click E-mail Accounts on the Tools menu.
  2. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  3. Click your Microsoft Exchange Server, and then click Change.
  4. Click to check the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box, and then click Next.
  5. Click OK when you are prompted with a message that states the following:
    The operation you selected will not complete until you click Exit from the File menu, and then restart Microsoft Office Outlook.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. Quit and restart Outlook 2003.

Disabling Cached Exchange Mode will remove Business Contact Manager from your Profile


As mentioned previously in this article, Cached Exchange Mode is required in order for Business Contact Manager to associate and load with your profile containing an Windows Small Business Server 2003 Exchange service. If you disable Cached Exchange Mode after adding the service, Business Contact Manager will be removed from the profile and you will need to create a new profile in order to again use Business Contact Manager.
