Firewall Software Reports Anomalous UDP Packets from 65.54.240.61 Port 7001 (831703)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.0
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.5
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.6
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.7
- Microsoft Windows Messenger 5.0
- Microsoft MSN Messenger 5.0
- Microsoft MSN Messenger 6.0
SYMPTOMS
Your firewall software may report anomalous User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets from a source IP address of 65.54.240.61 on port 7001. For example, the report may look similar to the following report: Date and Time 65.54.240.61 port 7001 to Local IP address port 1052 CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you are using Microsoft Windows Messenger version 4.0 or later, or MSN Messenger 5.0 or later. The behavior occurs because Messenger uses a server at this IP address to detect if your computer is behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) or firewall device.
This test helps to determine if the NAT or firewall device supports connections that permit video conferencing, voice (computer-to-computer calling), or phone calling (computer-to-phone calling). Because of the test, several different kinds of programs can work through the existing infrastructure.
RESOLUTION
No action is required because this behavior causes no adverse effects.
