A data alignment exception occurs in DCOM on a MIPS IV FP-based system (831671)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.1

SYMPTOMS

When a program uses distributed component object model (DCOM) services on Microsoft Windows CE operating systems that are based on the MIPS IV FP microprocessor, an exception may occur.

Debug information shows that the exception occurs in the PingServer function call.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the calculation of a pointer into an allocation may cause a pointer not to be aligned on an 8-byte boundary. Alignment varies among microprocessors, as follows:
  • On the MIPS IV FP microprocessor, data access must be aligned to 64-bit (8-byte) boundaries.
  • On most other microprocessors that are supported by Windows CE, data access must be aligned to 32-bit (4-byte) boundaries.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft as Windows CE 4.1 Core OS QFE 031219_KB831671. To resolve this problem immediately, click the following article number for information about obtaining Windows CE Platform Builder and core operating system software updates:
