An expired advertisement reruns on clients after you reactivate the advertisement in SMS 2.0 (831670)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

If an advertised program in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 expires, and then you later reactivate the advertisement, the advertisement may run again on all client computers, even on computers that previously ran the advertisement. You may also find that the advertisement's complete file (*.xxx, where xxx is an incremental number) was deleted from the %systemroot%\MS\SMS\clicomp\apa\Data\Complete folder on the SMS client computer.

You may also see entries in the SMSAPM32.log file that are similar to the following:
SCHEDULER : Unscheduling program Program Name in package Package Name for <ANY USER>.
SCHEDULER : Program not unscheduled, return code = -536608767.
SCHED DATA : Removing file C:\WINNT\MS\SMS\clicomp\apa\Data\Complete\Sitecode0000x.xxx

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You turned on Program restarts computer in the program properties.
  • You used the SMS Software Update Services (SUS) Updates Wizard default settings to create the program and the advertisement. The default settings turn on the Program restarts computer option in the program properties.
When you use the Program restarts computer option, the "SuccessfulRunTime" section is not created in the complete file (*.xxx) for that advertisement. The Advertised Programs Monitor on the client cannot find the "SuccessfulRunTime" section in the complete file and deletes the *.xxx file after the advertisement expires. Therefore, client computers will rerun any advertisement that you reactivate.
