Cannot Use the Keyboard to Use Menus or Shortcuts in Virtual PC 2004 (831523)

SYMPTOMS

When the ALT key or the CTRL key are configured to be the host key on a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, you may not be able to use the keyboard to use menus or shortcuts.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the menu accelerator does not function correctly on certain keyboards when the ALT key or the CTRL key are configured as the host key on a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use a key other than the ALT key or the CTRL key for the host key on a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004.

To change the host key for Virtual PC, follow these steps:
  1. Open Virtual PC Console.
  2. On the File menu, click Options.
  3. Click Keyboard.
  4. In the Current host key box, click to select the key name, and then on the keyboard, press the key that you want to use as the host key.
The name of the new host key appears in the Current host key box.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
