Virtual PC May Not Acquire DNS or Default Gateway Information When TCP/IP Is Disabled on the Host Computer (831522)

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine that runs in Shared Networking mode, the virtual machine may not acquire any DNS or default gateway information if the following conditions are true:
  • You disable the TCP/IP protocol on the host computer, and then start Virtual PC 2004.
  • You re-enable the TCP/IP protocol on the host computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Virtual PC 2004 reads the DNS and the default gateway information only on the host computer when Virtual PC 2004 starts.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, close and then restart Virtual PC 2004.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Virtual PC 2004.
