You Cannot Disconnect Shared Folders from a Virtual Machine (831518)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

SYMPTOMS

When you right-click a shared folder, and then click Disconnect, you may receive the following error message:
Network connection could not be found.
When you click OK, the shared folder is still connected to your virtual machine.

This problem occurs in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 under the following guest operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition SP1
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4 Service Pack 6 (SP6)
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)
Under the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition guest operating system, when you right-click a shared folder and then click Disconnect, nothing occurs, and the shared folder is still connected to your virtual machine.

Under Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (SR2) and Microsoft Windows 95 Second Edition, you do not have the menu option to disconnect when you right-click a shared folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Virtual PC Console to remove the shared folders. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. In the Virtual PC Console, click to select the virtual machine where you want to remove the shared folders.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Shared Folders.
  4. Click the shared folder that you want to remove.
  5. Click Remove.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each shared folder that you want to remove.
  7. Click OK.
