Network Adapter Does Not Obtain an IP Address in Shared Networking Mode (831516)

SYMPTOMS

When you configure Microsoft Virtual PC Virtual Machine to use Shared networking (NAT) mode, the network adapter does not automatically obtain an IP address that is in the 192.168.131.* range. Instead, your adapter continues to use a previously configured IP address.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • Your virtual machine has Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installed.
  • The process of switching your virtual machine to Shared networking (NAT) mode was not completed successfully.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the ipconfig command to release and then renew the IP address of your virtual machine. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On your Windows NT 4.0 virtual machine, click Start, click Run, type ipconfig /release, and then click OK.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type ipconfig /renew, and then click OK
