You cannot access an LS-120 disk from a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 (831511)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to access an LS-120 drive (also known as a SuperDrive) from a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine even though you can access it from your physical computer.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you try to access a disk other than a standard 1.44 megabyte (MB) floppy disk from the LS-120 drive. Virtual PC 2004 does not fully support access to an LS-120 drive from a virtual machine. In Virtual PC 2004, a virtual machine can only read from or write to a 1.44 MB floppy disk in the LS-120 drive. A virtual machine cannot read from or write to a 120 MB disk in the LS-120 drive.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the shared folders feature in Virtual PC 2004 to access the 120 MB disk in the LS-120 drive. For additional information about how to turn on shared folders, see the "sharing folders between virtual machines and host operating systems" topic in Virtual PC Help.
