Cannot drag a file directly from a network share to the host operating system (831509)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, when you try to drag a file from a virtual machine to your host operating system, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Virtual PC has encountered an error in the guest while copying files.

An error in Virtual PC has occurred

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the file that you try to copy from your virtual machine that is located on a network share.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, copy the file from the network share to the desktop of your virtual machine, and then drag it to your host operating system.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
