You receive a "Network setup error" error message when you share a folder (831503)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 guest operating system, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • When you try to share a folder by using the Connect Network Drive command on the Disk menu in File manager, you receive the following error message:
    Network setup error
  • In File Manager, all the drive letters are assigned to unknown shared folders

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you have Microsoft Virtual Machine Additions for MS-DOS installed. The MS-DOS shared folder driver (Fshare.exe) that is installed with the Virtual Machine Additions for MS-DOS is not compatible with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 or EMM386.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not use the MS-DOS shared folder driver with a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 guest operating system.

To prevent the MS-DOS shared folder driver from loading when you start the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 guest operating system, remove the line from the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Autoexec.bat file that loads Fshare.exe. To do so, remove a line that is similar to the following line:

C:\VmAdd\Fshare.exe

For example:
  1. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type:

    edit c:\autoexec.bat

  2. Press ENTER.
  3. Delete the line that loads Fshare.exe.
  4. Save the file, exit MS-DOS Editor, and then restart the guest operating system.
