Video stops or you receive a "video error" error message when you try to record a television show in Windows XP Media Center (831274)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to record a television show in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, the video and the audio may stop, and you may experience any one or both of the following symptoms:
  • If you close Media Center, the recording indicator shows that the TV show is recording.
  • If you start Media Center, and then open My TV, you receive the following error message:
    Video Error: Some of the files needed to display...

CAUSE

This issue may occur if your Recordings folder is encrypted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove the encryption from your Recordings folder:
  1. To start Windows Explorer, right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Find the following folder:

    path\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV

  3. Right-click the Recorded TV folder, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then click OK.
