File Menu Is Selected When You Type a Forward Slash Mark (/) as the First Character in a Cell (831237)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to type a forward-slash mark (/) as the first character in a cell of a Microsoft Excel 2002 worksheet, the File menu is selected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the forward slash mark (/) keystroke can be used to activate the Microsoft Excel menu bar or start Help for Lotus 1-2-3 users.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior, delete the forward slash mark (/) keystroke as a setting. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Transition tab, delete or change the character in the Microsoft Excel menu or Help key box.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
