FIX: MS03-041 may prevent SSL connections (831225)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0

We strongly recommend that all users upgrade to Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0 running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. IIS 6.0 significantly increases Web infrastructure security. For more information about IIS security-related topics, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

SUMMARY

After you apply the MS03-041 security update to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0, clients may not be able to reach Web sites by using HTTPS.

CAUSE

If a certificate without an enhanced key usage (EKU) extension exists on an IIS computer, the certificate is not included in the certification authority list that is sent to client. The certificate is not included because the version of Schannel.dll that is included with IIS 4.0 does not have the new EKU calling convention that the hotfix version of Crypt32.dll has.
