"Buffer overrun detected" error when you log on to a Systems Management Server 2.0 site (831205)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 primary site, you may receive the following error:
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: F:\SMS\bin\i386\smsexec.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

SMS Crash.log files or User.dmp files may not be created when this error occurs.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Client Configuration Manager tries to process a client configuration request (CCR) when the Machine name field contains more than 31 characters.
