Content that is outside the search scope is unexpectedly returned in the search results when you search a portal site that is in your SharePoint Portal Server server farm (831203)

SYMPTOMS

When you search a portal site that is in your server farm deployment of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you may find that content that is outside the search scope is unexpectedly returned in the search results. For example, when you search a portal site that is in your server farm for specific content, you may find that content from other portal sites that are in your server farm is listed in the search results.

CAUSE

This problem occurs in situations when the equal sign (=) in the scope clause of the query is incorrectly processed. In SharePoint Portal Server 2003, portal queries use an equal sign (=) in the scope clause as follows:

Scope = ScopeName

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
