How to Remove the Roxio CD Burning Plug-In from Windows Media Player 9 on a Computer That Is Running Windows 2000 (831158)

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 on a computer that is running Windows 2000, you cannot use any third-party CD burning software.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player 9 automatically installs the Roxio CD burning plug-in on your computer. If you already have third-party CD burning software installed, the third party CD burning components may conflict with the Roxio CD burning plug-in.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, try one of the following methods:

Block the Installation of the Roxio CD Burning Plug-In

When you install new Windows Media Player 9 on a Windows 2000-based computer, you have the option not to install the Roxio CD burning plug-in in Windows Media Player 9 by setting a Windows Registry key to block the installation of the plug-in. Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  4. Type AdaptecBlock, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. Type 1, and then click OK.
The value 1 prevents the installation of the plug-in. The value 0 allows the installation of the plug-in.

Once you have set this Windows Registry key, you can then install Windows Media Player 9 and not have the Roxio CD burning plug-in installed.

Remove the Roxio CD Burning Plug-In

If you have already installed Windows Media Player 9 on a Windows 2000-based computer, you can remove the Roxio CD burning plug-in from Windows Media Player 9. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. Type dir "C:\Program files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared", and then press ENTER.
    If you receive a File not found message, or if no files are listed, the Roxio CD burning plug-in has not been installed or has already been removed. If files are listed, go to step 3.
  3. Type cd %SystemRoot%\, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type uneng.exe +Silent, and then press ENTER.
Note If later you decide that want the Roxio CD burning plug-in, you must reinstall Windows Media Player 9 for Windows 2000.
