You receive an "Unable to read names from ODBC data source" error message or the program stops responding when you use the organization chart wizard to import DB2 6.1 or 7.0 data in Visio 2003 (831075)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Visio 2003, when you use the Organization Chart Wizard to import data from an IBM DB2 Universal Database 6.1 or 7.0 database to your organization chart, Visio 2003 may stop responding (hang) or you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Unable to read names from ODBC data source

CAUSE

This problem may occur in situations where a compatibility issue exists with Visio 2003 and the IBM DB2 Data Sources Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver, and this problem prevents Visio 2003 from reading the data in the database correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, convert the database to another format that is supported by the ODBC driver (for example, convert the database to Microsoft Office Access 2003 format), or use another third-party ODBC driver instead of the IBM DB2 ODBC driver.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
