OneNote 2003 temporary files may remain in your temp folder (831040)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

When you view your TEMP folder (path\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp), you may find many temporary files that are similar to the following:
  • Files that have the .onetoc extension.
  • Files that have a file name that is similar to {BF9AD2F6-CF27-4C69-A48E-671DD01DF578}.
  • Files that have (Working Copy) as part of the file name.
  • Files that have the .one extension.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 is idle or when you shutdown OneNote 2003. When OneNote is idle or you shut down OneNote 2003, OneNote 2003 searches for OneNote 2003 files to optimize. When OneNote 2003 optimizes a file, it creates a "working copy" of the file in your TEMP folder. If during this process of file optimization, OneNote 2003 encounters a file that is damaged or a file that is corrupted, OneNote 2003 may quit unexpectedly. As a result, these temporary OneNote 2003 files may remain in your TEMP folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, clean your TEMP folder of the temporary files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
  2. In the Select Drive dialog box, change the Drives box to the drive that contains your TEMP folder, and then click OK.
  3. On the Disk Cleanup tab, click to select the Microsoft Office Temporary Files check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
