How to Upgrade Live Communications Server 2003 Evaluation Edition to the Released Version (830935)

The Evaluation Edition is for evaluation purposes only. You must deploy it only in a test environment that is separated from a production environment. With the Evaluation Edition software, you can test Live Communications Server 2003 for 120 days from the day of installation. Because of the inherent purpose of testing the Evaluation Edition of Live Communications Server, Microsoft does not provide an automatic upgrade path to the full-featured product. However, several customers have requested to preserve the data that they entered during the evaluation period. Therefore, Microsoft is providing a manual procedure to migrate existing data when you deploying a full-featured server after you review the Evaluation Edition. MORE INFORMATIONOverviewFollow these steps on every server where you move from the Evaluation Edition to the full version of Live Communications Server 2003, version 1.0. This procedure encompasses the following parts: - Back up your existing data.
- Remove the Evaluation Edition.
- Install the retail released version.
Important You do not have to use this procedure on computers that have only the following components installed: - Live Communications Server Administration Tools.
- Live Communications Server IM Archiving Service.
Step-by-Step InstructionsStep 1: Back Up the Data on the ServerBack up your data. As a result of an unforeseen event, you may have to perform a clean installation. Use the Dbbackup tool to back up your database. To do so, type the following command at a command prompt: Dbbackup.exe /backupfile:filename.dat By default, the Dbbackup tool is located in the following folder: %systemdrive%\Program Files\Microsoft LC\Server\Support For additional information about the Dbbackup tool, view the Dbbackup-ReadMe.doc file. The Dbbackup-ReadMe.doc file is located in the Documentation folder on the Live Communications Server CD. Step 2: Remove the Evaluation Edition of Live Communications Server- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Live Communications Server, and then click Change/Remove.
- Complete the removal procedure. Make sure that you click to select the Keep the Active Directory objects in domain controller check box and the Keep the Home Server database check box to keep Active Directory directory services objects and the Home Server database.
Because the Evaluation Edition was in a test environment, you can install the transaction logs on the same hard disk where you stored the database file. However, in a production environment it is good practice to install the transaction logs on one physical hard disk, and to install the database on another physical hard disk to maintain optimal performance.
If you installed the database and transaction on the same physical hard disk, follow these steps to move the database to another physical hard disk: - Create the new folder for the database file on the separate hard disk.
- Copy the Evaluation Edition of the database file to the newly created folder.
By default, the database file is located in the %systemdrive%\LC Data folder.
Step 3. Install the Retail Released Version of Live Communications Server- Run the Setup program for Live Communications Server. When the Choose Destination Locations dialog box appears, use the new location for the database. In this dialog box, change the path for Install database to: to the folder you created in step 1 of the previous procedure (Remove the Evaluation Edition of Live Communications Server).
- Also in the Choose Destination Locations dialog box, change the Install transaction log to: path to the location on a separate hard disk from the database folder.

Note If an unforeseen event occurs, use Dbbackup.exe to restore the database file. For more information about how to use the Dbbackup tool to restore a database, see the Dbbackup-ReadMe.doc file in the Documentation folder on the CD.
