Attachments do not appear in Outlook Web Access after you move your mailbox between two Exchange servers in Exchange 2000 Server (830586)

SYMPTOMS

E-mail message attachments do not appear when you use the Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) client. When you view the e-mail message in your Inbox, the message has an attachment icon, but the preview pane indicates that there is no attachment in the e-mail message.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  • The e-mail message in the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 information store originated from a non-MAPI e-mail client.
  • The original MIME e-mail message had one or more attachments.
  • You moved the mailbox that contained the MIME e-mail message from an Exchange 2000 computer to an Exchange 2003 computer or from an Exchange 2003 computer to an Exchange 2000 computer by using the Move Mailbox feature.
A MIME e-mail message that is multipart/mixed, with plain text as the message body, contains an attachment that has a content identifier. During the move-mailbox process, when you move a mailbox between an Exchange 2000 computer and an Exchange 2003 computer, MIME e-mail messages are converted to MAPI format. When the e-mail messages are converted from MIME format to MAPI format, the content identifier is parsed and is promoted to a MAPI property.

After the move-mailbox procedure is completed, when you open the e-mail message by using OWA, the e-mail message is converted back to MIME format. Because of the content identifier, a multipart/related MIME e-mail message is generated. OWA cannot display the attachment because the plain text message body cannot reference the attachment.

Note An example of a MIME e-mail client is the University of Washington's Pine Internet e-mail client.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
