SUMMARY

This article describes the types of information that are recorded by the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003 IM Archiving Service.

When you view the IM Archiving Service message archive, you may notice that, in addition to the expected instant messaging messages, other information has also been logged.

MORE INFORMATION

The IM Archiving Service records all Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages of the MESSAGE method type. Typically, these are instant messages that users type and send to each other. However, when users initiate any of the following sessions by using Microsoft Windows Messenger, Windows Messenger sends SIP messages of the method type MESSAGE as part of the session invite mechanism to establish the call:

White Board
Application Sharing
File Transfer
Remote Assistance

As a result, these session-initiation messages are archived. When you view the message archive, these messages appear in addition to the typical instant messages that users send to each other.

To view the message archive, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Enterprise Manager utility. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
  2. Expand Microsoft SQL Servers, expand SQL Server Group, expand (local) (Windows NT), and then expand Databases.
  3. Expand RtcLog, and then click Tables.

Note If you specified a database other than RtcLog during the installation of the IM Archiving Service, expand that database instead.
  4. In the right pane, right-click messages0 or messages1, point to Open Table, and then click Return all rows.
