You Cannot Select a Home Server That Contains an Underscore in Its Name (830225)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to make Live Communications available for a user, you cannot select a particular Microsoft Office Live Communications 2003 home server. The server that you want to select does not appear in the Home server list on the Live Communications tab of the username Properties dialog box. However, other servers may appear in this list.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you install Live Communications Server 2003 on a server that contains an underscore (_) in its name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove Live Communications Server 2003 from the server, rename the server so that it no longer contains an underscore in its name, and then reinstall Live Communications Server 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

When you create a computer name that contains an underscore, you receive the following message:The computer name "computer_name" contains one or more nonstandard characters. Standard characters include letters (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9), and hyphens (-). Using a nonstandard name will prevent other users from finding your computer on the network, unless your network is using the Microsoft DNS Server. Do you want to use this nonstandard name? The underscore is a nonstandard character for a computer name. Live Communications Server 2003 does not currently support making Live Communications available for users on a home server that contains an underscore in its name.
