An access violation occurs when you click an HTML file in Windows Explorer (829742)

SYMPTOMS

When you click to select an HTML file in Microsoft Windows Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Unhandled exception in IEXPLORE.EXE (MSHTML.DLL): 0xC0000005: Access Violation.

The error occurs although you do not open the file.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the HTML file contains both HTML+TIME code and Direct Animation controls. The problem occurs when you select the file in Windows Explorer, and the WEBDAV protocol tries to generate a preview of the file in the left pane of Windows Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the MS04-004 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894).
