INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Excel 2002 issues that are fixed in the Excel 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package that is dated May 6, 2004.

Issues that are fixed in the hotfix package

The following issues are fixed in this hotfix package:

  • 838895 Error message when you try to save a workbook that was opened from a mapped drive location in Excel 2002

  • 835718 Date format is not correct when you convert a CSV text file in Excel 2002 by using a VBA macro

  • 840640 "'filename.xls' cannot be accessed" error message when you open a workbook in Excel 2002 during a remote desktop session

  • 838910 Controls move to the left of the worksheet in Microsoft Excel 2002

  • 831824 Multilevel subtotals are in the wrong position in Excel 2002

The following issues are also fixed in this hotfix package:
  • If you save and then close an Excel 2002 workbook that contains a null value dimension from an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) cube in the PAGE field of a PivotChart, Excel may quit unexpectedly when you reopen the workbook and you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

  • After you upgrade to Excel 2002, an add-in program that you used in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel may cause the following error message when the add-in programmatically uses the Add method:
    Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    If you view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to the following:

  • When you click to select an Excel 2002 chart that is embedded in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, and then cancel the selection by clicking else where in the presentation, the aspect ratio of the chart may change.
  • If you lock your computer after you run a macro or a batch file in Excel 2002, you may receive the following error message when you unlock your computer:
    Not enough system resources to display completely

  • When you use an ICA client to connect to a server that has Citrix MetaFrame XP installed and you try to save an Excel 2002 file, you may receive the following error message.

  • In Excel 2002, when you open a workbook that contains a text box that has the Automatic size option selected on the Alignment tab, the workbook may open very slowly.
  • If you use the Histogram option of the Analysis Toolpak add-in in Excel 2002, Excel 2002 may quit unexpectedly.
  • When you calculate a selection (range) of cells in an Excel 2002 workbook that uses the Selection.Calculate method, you receive the following error message in the worksheet cell:
    Subscript out of range
  • When the last measure that is included in a PivotTable in Excel 2002 and that is attached to an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) cube is blank, you may receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

  • When you try to update the Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) links in an Excel 2002 workbook, Excel 2002 may quit unexpectedly and you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.


    When you view the details of the error message, you find an error signature that is similar to the following:

  • On a slow client computer, when you use Excel 2002 in a Terminal Services environment, Excel 2002 may continue to scroll when you use the mouse to scroll a worksheet more than 1000 rows.
  • If you lock cells in an Excel 2002 workbook by using a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro, and then save and close the workbook, you can click to select a locked cell after you reopen the workbook.
  • When you use a Workbook_Open event in a VBA macro to open a workbook after a custom .xla add-in has loaded, macros that are contained in the .xla file may not function.
  • If you press SHIFT+F9 multiple times to recalculate a worksheet, Excel 2002 may stop responding with 100 percent CPU usage.
  • When you use a VBA macro to open an Excel 2002 workbook that contains a Microsoft Outlook Express header, the Excel 2002 process may continue to run when the VBA macro uses the Quit method to close the workbook.
  • When you use a VBA macro that unprotects the workbook, makes changes, reprotects the workbook, and then saves the file while closing, the following issues may occur when you reopen the workbook:
    • You receive the following error message:
      Unable to Read file
    • The VBA macros are removed from the workbook.
    • PivotCache is removed from the Excel 2002 workbook.
  • When you programmatically clear merged cells in Excel 2002, and then paste values in the range of cells, you receive the following error message:
    The operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized.

  • When you move a ToolTip out of the way in Excel 2002, Excel 2002 may quit unexpectedly and you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
    • The data validation input dialog box appears.
    • You are in data entry mode.
    • You change sheets to use the point-and-click range entry.
    • You move the input message ToolTip.
  • When you remove a filter in Excel 2002 from a column of VLookUp formulas in a workbook where a fill was performed to overtype the formula with a zero value, Excel 2002 may quit unexpectedly.
  • When you type the first initial and the last name of a recipient in the To, CC, or BCC line of an e-mail message, the name is not resolved when you work off-line in Microsoft Outlook 2002.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, Microsoft has not tested this fix on Office XP SP2 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 3. If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP2 installed, some file conflicts might occur. Microsoft supports this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
