OL2002: Outlook Automatically Disconnects a Dial-Up Connection After E-Mail Messages Are Sent or Received (829169)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you configure Microsoft Outlook 2002 to use a dial-up connection to send and to receive e-mail messages, Outlook 2002 automatically dials the dial-up connection, it sends and receives e-mail messages, and it disconnects the dial-up connection, even though the Hang up when finished with a manual Send/Receive option is not selected.

CAUSE

By design, Outlook 2002 disconnects the dial-up connection after the program automatically sends and receives e-mail messages, even if the Hang up when finished with a manual Send/Receive option is not selected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, if you do not want Outlook 2002 to disconnect the dial-up connection after e-mail messages are sent and received, follow these steps:
  1. Start Outlook 2002.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Mail Setup tab.
  4. Click to clear the Automatically dial during a background Send/Receive check box, click to clear the Hang up when finished with a manual Send/Receive check box, and then click OK.
  5. On the Tools menu, point to Send/Receive Settings, and then click Define Send/Receive Groups.
  6. Click to clear the Schedule an automatic send/receive every x minutes check box, where x is the number of minutes that Microsoft Outlook waits to do a background Send/Receive when the program is open, and then click Close.
  7. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  8. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  9. Select an account, click Change, and then click More Settings.
  10. Click the Connection tab.
  11. Click Connect using my phone line, and then in the Modem section, click the connection that you want to use under Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection.
  12. Click OK, and then click Next.
  13. Repeat steps 9 through 12 for each e-mail account that you want to configure, and then click Finish.
After you configure these settings, Outlook 2002 will dial the dial-up connection and stay connected until you end the Outlook session. However, you must click Send/Receive to send and receive e-mail messages.
