You receive an "Attempting to use an incompatible version of visgrf.dll. Please re-install visgrf.dll" error message when you try to add a shape to a drawing in Visio 2003 (828967)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a shape to a drawing in Microsoft Office Visio 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Attempting to use an incompatible version of visgrf.dll. Please re-install visgrf.dll.
If you continue to modify your drawing, you may find that shapes and connectors appear incorrectly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • Both Microsoft Visio 2002 and Visio 2003 are installed on the same computer.
  • Visio 2002 is installed by a member of the Users group.
  • Visio 2003 is installed by a member of the Administrators group that is used by all Users.
  • Visio 2002 has been repaired or has been updated.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following:
  • Start Visio 2002.
  • Remove Visio 2002 from the computer.
