A3: To install directly from the CD, open the CD-ROM drive in My Computer, and run the file setup.exe. This will start the Recognizer Pack setup.

Q4: How do I use the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack?

A4: The Tablet PC Recognizer Pack installs the handwriting and speech recognizers for the languages you select during setup and also updates the Tablet PC Input Panel. You can change the keyboard options and add speech recognizers in the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box that is available from the Regional and Language Options tool in Control Panel.

Q5: After I install the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, why does a command prompt window appear the first time I restart?

A5: To successfully complete the installation, a script file runs after the first restart. The command prompt window closes automatically when the script completes and does not appear again.

Tablet PC Input Panel

Q1: The Input Panel on-screen keyboard keys do not display correctly when I select Japanese in the language bar. How do I fix this?

A1: If you do not have the Japanese keyboard driver installed when you switch the keyboard input language to Japanese, the key labels will not match your selected language. To fix this, you must install the Japanese keyboard driver. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Make sure that you have a standard keyboard attached to your tablet computer.
2. Tap Start, and then tap Control Panel.
3. Tap Printers and Other Hardware, and then tap Keyboard.
4. On the Hardware tab, under Devices, tap the default standard keyboard device.
5. Tap Properties.
6. On the Driver tab, tap Update Driver.
7. In the Hardware Update Wizard, tap Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then tap Next.
8. Tap Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, and then tap Next.
9. Tap to clear the Show compatible hardware check box.
10. In the Manufacturer list, tap (Standard keyboards).
11. In the Model list, tap Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key).
12. Tap Next, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the Hardware Update Wizard.

After you install the Japanese keyboard driver and restart your Tablet PC, the on-screen keyboard layout matches the expected 106/109 Japanese keyboard layout when you select Japanese in the language bar.

Q2: If I remove the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, does the Tablet PC Input Panel update remain installed?

A2: The Tablet PC Input Panel update installs as part of the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack. If you remove the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, you also remove the Input Panel update.

Note If you de-select the handwriting and speech recognizer components in the Recognizer Pack setup, you can minimize the installed files without completely removing the Tablet PC Input Panel update. As a result, you have just Input Panel update.

Q3: On my East Asian version of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, after I installed the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, my Writing Pad changed to a different language. How do I change it back?

A3: Typically, the Tablet PC Input Panel Writing Pad retains the most recent non-East Asian language that is selected in the language bar. However, if you install the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, you may incorrectly reset the Writing Pad language to German. To set the Writing Pad back to a language other than German, change the language bar to the non-East Asian language that you want, and then change it to the appropriate East Asian language. For example, to set the Writing Pad to English and the on-screen keyboard to Japanese, change the language bar to English, and then change it to Japanese. Because English was the last non-East Asian language that was set, the Writing Pad is set to English, and the rest of the Input Panel is set to Japanese.

Q4: After I install the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, why do I now only have two tabs in the Tablet PC Input Panel?

A4: One of the updates to the Tablet PC Input Panel was a design change that removes the additional English Writing Pad. With this update installed, you only have two tabs for non-East Asian languages: the Keyboard and the Writing Pad.

Q5: How do I change the Input Panel keyboard layout at the logon screen to match the default input language that is set in Control Panel?

A5: By default, the logon screen uses the Input Panel keyboard layout for the native language of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. To change this setting to match what you have selected as the default input language, follow these steps:

1. Tap Start.
2. Tap Control Panel.
3. Double-tap Regional and Language Options. If you are using Category view, first tap Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
4. On the Advanced tab, tap to select the Apply all settings to the current user account and to the default user profile check box.
   
   Note This setting affects the logon screen and applies to all new user accounts created on the computer.
5. Tap Apply, and then tap OK.
6. Tap OK.

Q6: How do I change the language that Write Anywhere uses for handwriting recognition?

A6: Currently, the Write Anywhere feature of the Input Panel is only available with the English handwriting recognizer.

Q7: After I install the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, my logon keyboard is blank. How do I fix this?

A7: This problem may occur if the U.S. keyboard is not installed. To install the U.S. keyboard, follow these steps:

1. Tap Start, tap Control Panel, and then tap Regional and Language Options. (If you use Category view, tap Date, tap Time, tap Language, and then tap Regional Options.)
2. On the Languages tab, tap Details.
3. In the Default input language list, select English (United States) - US, and then tap OK.
   Note If you want to use a different input language as the default, click the language that you want to use instead.
4. Tap the Advanced tab.
5. Tap to select the Apply all settings to the current user account and to the default user profile check box.
6. Tap OK, tap Apply, and then tap OK.
   Note To make sure that the settings take effect, restart your Tablet PC.

Windows Journal

Q1: Why does Windows Journal convert my handwriting to text in a different language than what I have selected in the language bar?

A1: Windows Journal maintains settings for what handwriting recognizer is used during recognition. Therefore, you must configure the appropriate recognizer independently of the language bar.

To change the active handwriting recognizer in Windows Journal, follow these steps:

1. Tap Start.
2. Tap All Programs, and then tap Windows Journal.
3. In Windows Journal, tap Tools, and then tap Options.
4. On the Other tab, select the handwriting recognizer that you want from the Choose a recognizer language drop-down list.
5. This step is optional: Tap Recheck Note.
   
   If you recheck an existing note after you change to a new recognizer language, Journal considers that note to be written in the new language. If the note was actually written in the new language, rechecking the note makes selections more accurate when you tap words to select them. The previous text conversion is not saved.
6. Tap Apply, and then tap OK to close the dialog box.

Q2: I installed the Chinese handwriting recognizers, but I cannot select them in Windows Journal. How do I select them?

A2: In Windows Journal, handwriting recognition is not available for Chinese (PRC) and Chinese (Taiwan). You can take and save notes in these languages, but you cannot convert your notes to typed characters or search through your notes.

Usage and Configuration

Q1: My language bar icon flashes for a while and the Task Bar becomes unresponsive when I start the computer. How do I work around this issue?

A1: This is a known issue when the language bar is minimized to the Taskbar. To work around this issue, restore the language bar, or wait several minutes for the icon to stop flashing.

Additionally, there is a hotfix that corrects this problem. A2: Each currently running instance of a program maintains its own input language setting. When you select different input languages for the running programs, these language states dynamically change as you switch between the programs. For example, if you start Notepad and select German from the language bar, and then start WordPad and select Japanese, when you switch back and forth between the programs, the input language changes to display the last selected input language for that program. When you close the program, the next time you start it (or if you start a new instance of a running program), the input language is set to the default input language as defined in Control Panel.

Q3: Why can I not add East Asian language input locales from the Text Services and Input Languages Control Panel tool?

A3: To give support for the East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), you must first install the supplemental language support files. To install these files, follow these steps:

1. Tap Start.
2. Tap Control Panel.
3. Tap Regional and Language Options. If you are using Category view, first tap Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
4. On the Languages tab, tap to select the Install files for East Asian languages check box.
   
   Note The East Asian files require about 230 megabytes of hard disk space.
5. Tap Apply to install the files.
6. Tap OK to close the dialog box when the file installation is completed.

Q4: In the Regional and Language Settings Control Panel tool, why are input language options selectable that I specifically did not install during the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack setup?

A4: Text services for languages you did not specifically install (or removed after setup) can still be selected in Control Panel. That language appears on the language bar. However, if you select one of those languages on the language bar, the handwriting recognizer for that language does not work because it is not currently installed.

Speech

Q1: Why is the Dictation command not available when I try to use speech recognition?

A1: The Dictation command is not available unless the language bar is set to the same language that is currently configured in the speech recognition settings. To select a different speech recognition engine, follow these steps:

1. Tap Start, tap Control Panel, and then double-tap Speech.
2. On the Speech Recognition tab, select the speech recognition engine that you want to use in the Language box.
3. Tap Apply, and then tap OK.
