JPEG images appear distorted in Internet Explorer 6 (828682)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to view an oversized image file that has a .jpeg file name extension, the image may appear distorted or unrecognizable.

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you apply the cumulative patch MS03-015 for Internet Explorer 6 SP1. The Automatic Image Resizing feature of Internet Explorer does not work as expected.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the Automatic Image Resizing feature of Internet Explorer 6. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Multimedia area, click to clear the Enable Automatic Image Resizing check box.
  5. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.
