Media Center Cannot Automatically Dial Your MSN 8 Dial-Up Account Access Number (828537)

SYMPTOMS

When you configure Microsoft Windows XP Media Center to automatically dial your MSN dial-up account access number, Windows XP Media Center cannot dial your MSN dial-up account access number.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Click Create a connection to the network at your office.
  3. In the Location Information dialog box, type the appropriate information, click OK, and then click OK to close the Phone and Modem Options dialog box and start the New Connection Wizard.
  4. In the New Connection Wizard, click Dial-up connection, and then click Next.
  5. Type a name for the network where you want to connect, and then click Next.

    Important Do not use the word "MSN" anywhere in this name.
  6. Type the phone number for your MSN dial-up access connection, including the area code and the "1" prefix, if you require them to connect.
  7. On the Connection Availability screen, click Anyone's Use, and then click Next.
  8. Specify whether you want a shortcut to the connection on your desktop.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. In the User Name box, type your MSN user name in the following format: MSN/username
  11. In the Password box, type your MSN password.
  12. Click to select the Save this user name and password for the following users check box.
  13. Click Anyone who uses this computer.
  14. Click Cancel.
  15. Start Media Center.
  16. Click Settings, click General, and then click Set Up Internet Connection.
  17. Click Connect to the Internet and download.
  18. Click Dial-up or Broadband with username and password.
  19. Click the new connection that you created and test it.
