BUG: Print job fails without an error message when you print a publication as color separations in Publisher 2003 (828510)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
- Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 with Digital Image Pro
SYMPTOMSWhen you print a publication as color separations or
composite cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK) in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003,
the print job may fail and you do not receive an error message. Publisher
behaves as though the job printed successfully, but there will be no job in the
print queue or no PostScript file on the disk.CAUSEThis problem occurs if the spool file exceeds approximately
500 megabytes (MB) on the disk.WORKAROUNDMethod 1: Print the Publication as Multiple Smaller Print JobsTo print the publication as multiple smaller print jobs, follow
these steps:
- On the File menu, click
Print.
- Under Print Range, click
Pages, and then type a page range that is smaller than the
whole publication.
- Make any other required settings changes, and then click
OK.
- Repeat steps 1-3 for another page range until all pages
have been printed.
Method 2: Reduce the Resolution of Overly High-Resolution ImagesYou can check the resolution of an image. To do so, follow these
steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Graphics
Manager.
- Select a graphic on the Graphics Manager
pane, and then click Details.
The Details window will list the graphic's effective
resolution (that is, its resolution at its current size). For example, a
graphic that is 600 dots per inch (dpi) that has been scaled to 50% size will
have an effective resolution of 1200 dpi. There are multiple ways to
reduce the resolution of overly high-resolution images. Here are some examples:
- In Graphics Manager, you can save the
graphic as a linked graphic. Then you can edit the linked graphic in a photo
editing program.
- You can right-click a graphic, and then click Save
as Picture. The Save as Picture dialog box contains
controls to change the resolution of a picture.
- You can run the Pack and Go Wizard. In the wizard, click to
select the Create links for all embedded graphics check box.
This saves all the embedded graphics as files. You can unpack the files, and
then use a photo editing program that supports batch processing to reduce the
resolution of all graphics in the publication at the same time.
MORE INFORMATIONThis problem typically occurs with publications that contain
a lot of high-resolution raster graphics (TIFFs, JPEGs, Photoshop EPS, and
other graphic types).
Regardless of its file format of the graphics,
a US Letter-sized image at 600 dpi generates a CMYK composite PostScript file
that is about 350 MB. Therefore, you can print a publication that has pages
that are covered completely with 600 dpi images one page at a time. A US
Letter-sized image at 300 dpi generates a CMYK composite PostScript file that
is about 85 MB. You can print a publication that is covered completely by 300
dpi images about five pages at a time. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft
products that are listed in the "Applies to"
section.
