"Device disappeared from the system" event appears in the system log when you delete a hardware volume shadow copy (828285)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you delete a hardware volume shadow copy that was created with the Volume Shadow Copy Service on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server, an event that is similar to the following may appear in the system event log:DateTime
PlugPlayManager
Error None 12
N/A Server_Name
The device 'Manufacturer Model (C) SCSI Disk Device' (SCSI\Disk&Ven_Vendor&Prod_Product_(C)Vendor&Rev_2001\4&13376f61&0&1017) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows Server 2003 identifies the hardware volume shadow copy in the same way that it identifies a hard disk. Therefore, when you delete a hardware volume shadow copy, Windows Server 2003 generates the same error message that is generated when a hard disk is removed.

RESOLUTION

You can ignore this event in the system event log if you have deleted a hardware volume shadow copy from your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
