"Device disappeared from the system" event appears in the system log when you delete a hardware volume shadow copy (828285)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
SYMPTOMSWhen you delete a hardware volume shadow copy that was created with the Volume Shadow Copy Service on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server, an event that is similar to the following may appear in the system event log:DateTime PlugPlayManager Error
None 12
N/A Server_Name The device 'Manufacturer Model (C) SCSI Disk Device' (SCSI\Disk&Ven_Vendor&Prod_Product_(C)Vendor&Rev_2001\4&13376f61&0&1017) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.CAUSEThis issue occurs because Windows Server 2003 identifies the hardware volume shadow copy in the same way that it identifies a hard disk. Therefore, when you delete a hardware volume shadow copy, Windows Server 2003 generates the same error message that is generated when a hard disk is removed.RESOLUTIONYou can ignore this event in the system event log if you have deleted a hardware volume shadow copy from your computer.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
