FIX: IoBuildPartialMdl API does not propagate the device memory flag (828274)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1

SYMPTOMS

A device driver that uses device I/O MDL, as opposed to a regular memory MDL, and then passes the MDL to the IoBuildPartialMdl function as the SourceMdl parameter, may crash the system. The crash may occur when the resulting partial MDL is referenced later.

When the crash occurs, you may receive the following error message on the stop error screen:
Stop 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

CAUSE

There is a bug in the IoBuildPartialMdl function that does not copy an internal flag from the main MDL to the partial MDL. This causes the partial MDL to point to regular memory space instead of I/O space. Therefore, memory manager may later crash.
